Exporting metadata from a business can be beneficial for a number of reasons. First and foremost, it allows businesses to share important information about their products or services with other organizations or individuals. This can be especially useful for companies that are looking to expand their reach and enter new markets. In addition, exporting metadata can help businesses to keep track of their products or services, as well as to monitor and analyze their performance. This can be useful for identifying trends, improving efficiency, and making informed business decisions. Finally, exporting metadata can also help businesses to establish their credibility and reputation, as it allows them to provide detailed and accurate information about what they offer.

To gain the report information in Canto you will be required to export all metadata into a CSV file.   Let's go through an example step by step together.

'Total amount of time' metadata, of videos stored

If you wished to calculate the total amount of time for videos in your main library, what would be the best method?

To do this you would export the metadata files to a CSV file, open in excel and calculate the hours of footage stored, from the 'time' column which contains the amount of time in seconds. This would be the best suggestion going forward for any type of 'total' data amount details you wish to obtain.

Here is a step by step tutorial on on where to access this area of Canto as well as the easiest way to calculate the data of the example for total video time.

Step 1

Go to your Settings, then click on the link & connections tab.

Step 2

Once there on the left menu select metadata export and this tab will require you to insert a name for the CSV file and then you can click 'export as CSV'. This will take time as Canto will have to send this file via email.

Step 3

Once you have received the email from Canto, you can go into the file, organise your file type column so all the videos are in grouped together. Note: these are all databasics demo fields.

Step 4

Then you will scroll to the right to the 'Time' Column, then you can get the autosum amount in ‘seconds’ value for your total time stored in Canto. It will look like this without the ‘Autosum’, ‘seconds’ and ‘minutes’ typed in:

Organising other metadata columns in the same format will allow you to organise report information as you see fit.  For more reporting methods please see the linked article to assist further.
